Mahatma Old Students Association Meeting 2016
A meeting of the alumni students of Mahatma Education Society’s Mahatma Night Degree College of Arts and Commerce was organized on Tuesday, 20th December, 2016. Venue of the meeting was the ground floor multipurpose hall of the Chembur Campus and time 7.00 p.m.
The objective of the Alumni meeting was to provide a platform for alumni to gather and network. It was an opportunity for them to catch up with the college and teachers and find ways and possibilities of connecting with the college to benefit from it and to offer it help and services. It was an occasion to muse down memory lane and recall happy college days.
The meeting started at 7.00 p.m. with Principal Padma Rangan madam addressing the gathering. She welcomed the students and took attendance. Students from several batches had reported. There were groups of students from as old as the 1999 batch. Students passing out from 2006, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 were present. Over 145 students attended the function. Teachers present were Professor Dongre, Professor Dube of Mahatma Night Junior College, Dr. Lata Krishnan, Professor Eknath Zhrekar, Professor Anaya Markandeya, Professor Tushar Pawar, Professor Harsh Shukla and Professor Vijayalaxmi Saini. Principal Dr. Padma Rangan Chaired the meeting.
During the formal function Principal Padma Rangan spoke to the students and expressed her joy in seeing a large turn out of alumni for the meet. She welcomed them wholeheartedly. She said it was the homecoming of the students to their Alma Mater. Madam said that the alumni represented the college in society. The alumni were their champions and stood for the ideals for which it stands. The college Principal and teachers were all proud of the achievements, progress and positions held by the alumni in society today.
Principal Madam felicitated the MMS Masters in Management Studies graduates who had successfully completed their course from Pillai Institute of Management Studies & Research, Rasyani and requested them to introduce themselves detailing position held at workplace. The students were happy to explain that Dr. K. M. Vasudevan Pillai, Founder, Chairman and CEO of Mahatma Education Society’s Pillai Group of Institutions sponsored 10 topper students of 2012 batch to the MMS course and also offered them placement facility. These MMS students shared their experience and expressed their gratitude to the college, Principal and Pillai Sir for their successful career.
Principal Padma Rangan Madam appealed to the alumni to donate a reference book to the college. She requested each one of them to donate one reference book of their choice to the college library. She wanted to create a section in the library where she would stock these books and document it as donated by the alumni of MNDC.
Padma Madam offered the students an opportunity to enroll for the YEP Youth Employability Programme as she is conducting this for the T.Y.B.Com. students. She reassured the alumni that if sufficient alumni enrolled, she would start a separate YEP batch for them. She invited them to the campus interviews organized in college and said that they may participate incase they are looking for a better career or change of job.
Students from 1999, 2011 and 2012 came up in groups to speak to the Principal and teachers. Students from 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 also came forward to talk and share. They were excited to explain their progress and position in life. Many students were well placed in government and private organizations. They held positions in the finance departments, Logistics companies, HR Departments, banks, insurance companies etc. Many had started their own enterprises and were successful entrepreneurs.
While the alumni arrived in batches and addressed the gathering there was cheering, laughter and joy in the air. They came with flowers and chocolates to meet their friends, teachers and Principal. Principal Padma Rangan was felicitated with a bouquet of flowers. A cake was cut and snacks distributed. The formal function was followed by music and dance. The alumni all shook a leg and clicked pictures with old friends and teachers. Nostalgic moments, peels of laughter, hugs and tears of joy all came to an end as the alumni meet closed at 9.30 p.m.
The power of social media brought them to the Alumni meet. While students, teachers and alumni connect on social media, the success of the alumni meet and its large turn out is a proof that face-to-face meetings are real, valuable and still popular. Alumni meets are precious! It was decided to start a WhatsApp group and Gmail group of the alumni students to enable a smart connect, sharing and interaction with the alumni.
Alumni Meet Report 2010-11
Mahatma Night Degree College has formed an Alumina Associations and got the same registered with the Deputy / Assistant Charity Commissioner Mumbai, on 19th October, 2010.
The college has already started collecting the data of our passed out students from the year 1989. The sources of collecting data work:
- Through our ex–students who were and are working in the institutions run by Mahatma Education Society.
- Through the current batch students.
- Through the previous years’ NSS / NCC leaders who are still keeping touch with the college to promote the activities.
These links brought in good results and we organized our first formal Alumina Meeting for the current academic year with the available 12 students on 2nd July, 2010. The main purpose of that meeting was to announce the registration formalities of the association and to invite more alumina students who could contribute to the growth of the college. The date for the next alumina meeting was also decided. They extended their sincere cooperation by helping to contact and collect details of more number of ex–students.
On 22nd November, 2010, on the very re-opening day of the college for the second term, the official inauguration of the Alumina Association took place. This association is named as MOSA (Mahatma Old Students Association). Dr. (Mrs.) Lata Krishnan, Secretary of the Alumina Association was in charge of the proceedings. The students’ council members and current final year students welcomed the ex–students. The inauguration programme started at 6 p.m. in the open auditorium on the ground floor.
Prof. Eknath Zhrekar delivered the welcoming speech and he underlined that the college would be very happy to know the present situation of the ex–students and to what extent the college could pave the way towards this current where about.
The Principal Dr. Padma Rangan welcomed the alumina and congratulated them on their presences at the function. She then addressed the gathering and in her speech highlighted the healthy support from the management side. She also upraised the alumina about their role and the purpose of the alumina association and said that the activities of the association would necessarily be linked to the above two. She pointed out that the role of the alumina was three tiers. She said that alumina is a beautiful concept which allows students to leverage each other in a very nice and mutually complemented way. The alumina meet provides –
- A platform for the alumina to cherish the time spend with the associates of the institute.
- Also set guide post for the current batches to emulate the success of their predecessors.
It is a channel for mutual exchange between former students and current ones.
This was followed by highlights of the mile stones achieved by the college in the recent years. She requested the ex–students to be a part of the college and extend this co operation for further growth in the areas of placement, sponsorships, academic guidance especially for the final year students’ sports, NSS, NCC activities. She announced that the silver jubilee year of the college was fast approaching the alumina association had as major role to play in the proposed plans of the next year.
The two most important plans announced were:
- An indoor sports tournament for the Degree College.
- An endowment fund to be collected by alumina students and the accrued interest of which could be used to pay the fees of the poor students of the college.
The Principal concluded her speech by announcing that the college website included the provision for alumina to directly register online. She requested all the alumina students to update the database regularly for memberships as well as for placement requirements. She finally ended her speech by reciting a poem dedicated to the alumina students.
Dr. K. M. Vasudevan Pillai in his key note address recalled the efforts of various people for the growth of Mahatma Education Society and Night Degree College. He promised that two more floors will be constructed shortly and adequate infrastructure will provided. He sanctioned sufficient fund for a 15 day intensive coaching with dinner instead of the seven day programme as of last year. He expressed his anxiety on the negligence of the authorities in providing right kind of education. He concluded his speech wishing all the best to the ex–students.
The first speaker on behalf of the Alumni Association was Mr. Sachin Naikhode. He passed his B.Com. Course in the year 2006–07 with flying colors scoring 97 marks in Accountancy. Now he is a very successful private tutor. He remembered the upper hands of his teachers in moulding him to what he is now. Before winding up his speech he showed his willingness to donate’ 10,000/- for the endowment fund.
Mr. Khalil Shaikh was the second speaker on behalf of the Alumni Association. He studied in Mahatma Education Society institution till graduation. He was absorbed by the management to the Accounts Department in the Khanda Colony campus. He was very emotional while saying that his wife is also staff member of Mahatma Education Society and his child is studying in Mahatma Education Society.
The third speaker was Mr. Ganesh, who is now working as a Senior Accountant also had something to speak about the positive roles of his teachers who are responsible for bringing him to the right track of confidence building.
Mr. Yuvraj Chavan, the NSS under officer in the academic year 2007–2008, is now working in the fire brigade, Chembur.
Mr. Sudhir Patil, who was also a senior cadet in NCC on the academic year 2007–2008, is working in a BPO.
Dr. Lata Krishnan proposed the vote of thanks. She announced that new members could register their names on the spot on the registration forms which were being circulated during the meeting itself. There was a provision for life membership @ Rs. 1000/- and annual membership @ Rs. 550/-. She took evergreen names and expressed gratitude for their presence at the met and for making the evening a grand success.
Last but not least, Dr. (Mrs.) Lata Menon who rejoined this college after a break of three years, couldn’t help move away without speaking a few words, when she saw a few of her students seated among others. She said that perhaps she was the only teacher who had taught both in a Day College as well as in a Night College. She was found very happy having come back to the Night College to teach the students who earn and learn.
Prof. Eknath Zhrekar from the Commerce Department was also student of Marathi Madyamik Shala. He expressed his pride being a part of Mahatma Education Society.
This was followed by a beautiful cultural programme presented by the current students in honor of the alumina students. Finally the meet concluded at 9 p.m. with snacks and refreshments.
