Placement Mela 2018

The MNDC Placement Mela 2018 was organized on Saturday, 22nd December, 2018 between 11.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. in Mahatma Night Degree College of Arts and Commerce, Chembur Naka, Chembur Mumbai 71. The venue was the ground floor multipurpose hall of the college campus. Eighteen companies participated in the event. They were Food Stuff; Securance; Andromedia; Rliance SMSL; Maruti Suzuki; HDFC LIFE; Pcesetters; Eureka Forbes Technical; Well Connect; ICICI Bank; SBI Bank; Calibehr; HDB Finance; ITD Technologies & Marketing Pvt. Ltd., Eureka Resources; Skynet Secure Solutions; Eureka Forbes Sales and Janaswami Chartered Accountats.

The MNDC Mela 2018 was a joint effort by the Mahatma Night Degree College of Arts and Commerce, Chembur Placement Cell with MCC Model Career Centre, CII Confederation of Indian Industries and MoLE Ministry of Labour and Employment. Principal Dr. Padma Rangan cut the ribbon and inaugurated the event. Amidst the hustle and bustle of students and company representatives were announcements of students clearing their interviews and receiving appointment letters. The slot between 11.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. was reserved for inhouse students. The F.Y.B.Com., S.Y.B.Com. and T.Y.B.Com. students of the college rallied around and selected a job of their choice. Each student carried with them over 20 copies of their resume and appeared for all the interviews scheduled by companies visiting the MNDC Placement Mela 2018. A lunch break was announced between 1.30 p.m. to 2.00 p.m. A counselling session for all the students was organized in room number 201 post lunch. Here the alumni students participated in large numbers as they were invited to visit between 2.00 p.m. to 6.00 p.m. Several company representatives made presentations. Food stuff a three-year old company started by Mr. Iyer is a startup that sources food stuff for hotels of all segments ranging from rom Udupi restaurants to five star hotels. The positions they offered were for marketing personnel and accounts officers. Their head office is located in Goregaon and store in Sanpada. Mr.Iyer shared his success story of how he left his cozy job to take on his business full time and was able to absorb a lot of his friends and colleagues form his previous job. The students listened with intent and were inspired.

HDB Finance was represented by a team of two young representatives. The presentation was made by the vibrant young lady Neha who explained how students could earn a salary and tall incentives by selling various products of the HDFC Bank. Loans, insurance, automobile loans, housing loans, credit cards etc.

A senior executive Mr. Khan from Maruti Suzuki spoke at length about his company and explained the positions available at Maruti Suzuki. The company wanted to recruit young graduates below the age of 25 as their marketing officials in their various showrooms pan India. Maruti Suzuki is a renowned brand and the students were excited to go in for interviews.

Several other companies made their presentations after which they returned to the MNDC Mela 2018 to continue with interviews. The students were now better informed and the footfall in the mela increased. The students receiving appointment letters were required to meet Dr. Padma Rangan, where she congratulated them and had a photo session with them. They were asked to share their experience about the interview they had cleared and the job they had obtained. A xerox copy of their appointment letter is maintained by the college.

Over 100 students participated in the event and 48 jobs clinched by young students and alumni of the college. The Management, staff and students of Mahatma Night Degree College were happy to have organized and participate in the MNDC Placement Mela 2018. The event was a success. The MNDC Placement Cell incharge Dr. Lata Krishnan thanked the college Management, Principal, staff, students and Mr. Saurabh and team from MCC, CII, MoLE for all their efforts to make the event a success. She believes that it is one step taken towards moving closer to the mission statement of the college.

The Student Placement Cell helps students procure not mere jobs but also a career in some cases. This improves the marketability of the course (B.Com). Some of our ex-students, now in good executive positions, visit our institution and recruit students. Since we are a night college, most of our students are employed. Our institution helps them in getting better jobs or improving their existing prospects. Placement is a responsibility of the institution which is earnestly undertaken by the placement cell of the college. Better placed jobs enhance the good will of the institution and increase admissions too! As a policy we encourage and regularly entertain pre-placement talks by corporates in various sectors. Companies and trainees conduct many interviews and give pre–placement talk.

‘CareeReady’ Programme for S.Y.B.Com. students of Mahatma Night Degree College – A MNDC Placement Cell initiative (January 2019)

The Placement Cell of Mahatma Night Degree College of Arts and Commerce, Chembur spear headed by the Principal of the college Principal Dr. Padma Rangan have set the ball rolling for the ‘CareeReady Programme’ organized by Antarang Foundation 231-C, Tawripada, Dr. S.S. Rao Road, Lalbaug, Parel, Mumbai 400 012, for the S.Y.B.Com. students of Mahatma Night Degree College of Arts and Commerce. This programme will begin in January, 2019. Antarang Foundation works to bridge the Employability gap that exists amongst disadvantaged youth.

The second orientation programme for Antarang Foundation’s ‘CarreReady’ was conducted on Thursday, 13th December, 2018 at 7.00 p.m. for the F.Y.B.Com. and S.Y.B.Com. students in room number 404. Mr. Nikhil Paul, faculty, Student Engagement & Operation, Antarang Foundation conducted the orientation programme. Placement Cell incharge Associate Professor Dr. Lata Krishnan coordinated the event.

The session was interactive with a slide show that kept the students engaged with graphics and statistics that opened their eyes to the realty of the Job environment in India. The details of the course CareeReady was explained and the students were assured hand holding till the age of 30 until they build their career. Mentoring by corporate guides, career counselling, training and job interviews all lined up to take the students forward. Mr. Nikhil Paul answered several questions and was successful in building the much needed excitement required to launch the CareeReady course.

Post this second round of counselling, interested students were invited to enrol for the training programme. 30 students of F.Y.B.Com. and S.Y.B.Com. enrolled for the programme scheduled to start in the first week of January, 2018. Two months of training in softskills, critical thinking, resume writing, decision making and grooming will be offered between 6.00 p.m. to 8.00 p.m. in the college premises. Once the course is completed the Antarang Foundation will send students for internships or training and those who wish will be give jobs of their choice. Mentoring and hand holding to help the students establish themselves in their careers is the objective of Antarang Foundation. MNDC is happy to collaborate with Antarang Foundation to help students succeed in their careers. We wish the program all success.

The course equips students with self-awareness, career awareness, work ethics and etiquettes, effective communications skills and basic computer literacy. At the end of the program, successful graduates are linked to relevant opportunities in their chosen careers. Antarang continues to mentor its students until they integrate well into the organised sector workforce. All Antarang graduates are confident young adults, who uphold our values of Regularity, Punctuality, Initiative and Stability.

Close to 1 million youngsters turn 18 every month, of whom an overwhelming 50% do not complete high school. Over time, this has resulted in millions of young adults who can neither afford higher education nor secure decent employment.

What then happens to these young minds? Some indulge in delinquent behaviour, while others are forced to work in exploitative conditions. Underage girls are married off and become pregnant. And a staggering 55,000 youth give into substance addiction every day. All this, when roughly 1,17,000 new jobs are created every single quarter and an acute shortage of skills has been reported across all sectors to fulfil these jobs.

The first orientation programme for Antarang Foundation’s ‘CarreReady’ was conducted on the 27th September, 2018 at 7.00 p.m. for the S.Y.B.Com. students in Room Number 404. Mr. Nikhil Paul, faculty, Student Engagement & Operation, Antarang Foundation conducted the orientation programme. Principal Dr. Padma Rangan graced the occasion. Placement Cell incharge Associate Professor Dr. Lata Krishnan coordinated the event.

The second round of orientation with the students of S.Y.B.Com. and their parents was announced and is scheduled to be conducted after the Diwali Vacation.

A cohort comprising of 30 students will be identified for the CareeReady Course that will be offered to the S.Y.B.Com. students in Semester IV. The follow through will be in Semester V and placement activity at the end of Semester VI. This plan of action was shared with all present at the orientation programme.

Mr. Nikhil Paul answered several questions and was successful in building the much needed excitement required to launch the CareeReady course. The programme ended with a vote of thanks delivered by a student, Ms. Kirti of S.Y.B.Com. B Division.

College-Corporate Partnership for Youth Employability

The College-Corporate partnership for youth employability moved on to the second phase where the trained students were assisted with placement service by the faculty of Technoserve India Pvt. Ltd., and the placement cell of Mahatma Night Degree College of Arts and Commerce, Chembur, Mumbai.

A Whats app group was created in January 2016 adding the contacts of all the trained certified students of the YEP – Youth Employability Programme. The administrators of the group are faculty of YEP (Barsha Bora and Priyanka) and placement incharge of the college Dr. Lata Krishnan. Barsha announced job opportunities on the Whats app group and invited interested students to respond on the group. Dr. Lata Krishnan contributed by announcing job opportunities on the group. This is an effective way in which continuous contact and communication is maintained and the placement activity is going on smoothly. As of now 4 students are placed and over 50 students have attended interviews in tier 1, tier 2 and tier 3 companies.

  5. Andromeda Sales and Distribution, Company Profile – Deals in all types of loans and has tie up with 25 banks, Job Profile – Business Development Executive, Salary 13,500 + incentives
  6. Bharati Axa, Job Profile – Insurance sales, Salary 1.8 lakhs p.a.
